Our unique approach to animal care
At Rural Learning, our Animal Care Sessions are designed to encourage children and young people to learn about animals and their vital role in our world. These hands-on sessions help those with a keen interest in animals learn how to look after and protect them in a small group setting. We do not encourage the breeding or buying of animals; instead, we utilise our own personal pets and animals from other charities and professional organisations to facilitate learning. Animals can provide a calming and supportive presence, especially for children and young people with additional needs, helping them with self-regulation, staying present, lowering anxiety, making mindful choices, and enhancing responsibility. The welfare of our animals is of utmost importance, therefore, we cannot allow any child or young person who may put them in danger onto our Animal Care Sessions but would advise either other sessions or a look at our available courses – the welfare of our animals is paramount at all times.

Who benefits from our sessions?
Our Animal Care Sessions are perfect for children and young people who have a keen interest in animals, those wishing to work or study animal care. We also offer work experience opportunities for those studying animal care post-16. Join us to develop a deeper connection with the animal world!
Activities and animal interactions
During an Animal Care Session, young people will engage in a range of activities tailored to the animals present. The animals will vary, and may be repeated across sessions, ensuring a diverse learning experience. We currently have hens, guinea pigs, tortoises, snakes, and African Land Snails. We also maintain strong links with outside agencies to introduce new animals. We aim to inform parents or carers at least a week in advance about the animals we will be working with, allowing for preparation and excitement.
Skills and knowledge gained
After attending an Animal Care Session, we hope young people leave with a deeper understanding of animal welfare, empathy, and responsibility. They will gain practical skills in animal handling and care, fostering a sense of connection to nature. We also aim for them to develop self-regulation, mindfulness, and a greater appreciation for the natural world around them.
